From the Top. What an awesome radio program and website for young musicians!! I just ran across the website this summer & it has wonderful information for young musicians - especially those who are serious about their art. There are answers to questions you might have, interviews with "pre-collegiate" musicians who have been on the radio program (including Alex Rabin, a Wayland High School student & pianist!). The radio program, From the Top, is aired on WGBH Sundays at 6:00. It is performances of pre-collegiate musicians from all over the world and includes some interviews and information about the person and music. Check it out!

College / University Music Schools This is a page of links to some of the country's best music / arts schools.

This page is specifically for College and University bands! Much of them are for marching bands, but the concert bands and wind ensembles are there, too!

Area Concerts by our HS & MS students as well as the pros. Send me announcements!! Watch for the jazz concerts in Natick at The Center for Arts!!

It takes practice to develop good practice skills! Learn about practice techniques for different kinds of problems.

The High School Hub site doesn't have to do with music, but it is a reference site for HS kids. Looks super! Everything from math tables, rhymes, news and citation rules to college sites, SAT question of the day and links to various learning games. Check it out!

Instrument Care Articles: How to take care of your instrument

Rhythm Reading - Thoughts about why it is important, how to get better at it and some practice sheets with MIDI files & a sheet of correct counting. Test yourself! (At the moment, there are only a few rhythm sheets ready - anyone want to help me finish up this project?? It requires some knowledge of note writing programs to create the original rhythm sheet, then I save the individual lines as a graphic & a MIDI file).

Index of past Tidbits. Included are

  • Jazz and Shakespeare - yes there is a connection!!
  • A look at Robert Schumann and Oklahoma!
  • We explored the Renaissance period of music. See examples of early music writing & hear a sound file of a composition by Queen Elizabeth I.
  • "I Didn't Know That!" Do you know why Bach spent a month in jail? Or can you play a hemi-demi-semi-quaver?? Or do you know what the mouse had to do with "Silent Night" (this has to do with our recent study of how a pipe organ works!)
  • The history of the clarinet.
  • A look at scales focusing on major, minor & chromatic, how to create them, learn them and a bit about the science / mathematics involved.
  • A continuation of our look at scales. We focused on the dorian and mixolydian scales and the medieval church modes from which they came and looked at how they are used today (especially in jazz), and then a bit about the science / mathematics of scales.
  • Why you can sometimes tell what country or culture a piece of music comes from?? In April's tidbit we looked at music from the Jewish tradition (including Klezmer), music from India and what is a raga, and music from Latin America - specifically the mambo that was included in Damn Yankees.
  • MARCHING BANDS!!!  Includes a brief history, some different styles of marching bands (and Drum Corps) and the commands that we use at WMS. There are LOTS of great pictures; you can almost hear the bands playing!
  • Handel's, Music For the Royal Fireworks and the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Phantom of the Opera.
  • Asian Music (Specifically Chinese - Japanese to follow, Music from India was included in Where is that music from?? This Tidbit explores why this music sounds like it comes from China.
